Tips for pro digital photography:

  • Pay attention to lens specs not megapixels
  • Shoot lots and lots of pictures
  • Use rapid charge batteries
  • Learn good photo editing software
  • Take classes and read articles
  • Use whitebalance for accurate color
Tips Explained
Plan
Not just a digital photo tip, planning your shots for lighting and composition before snapping the photo really helps. When you're shooting animals or kids for example, it pays to think how you are going to get the pose before hand since attention spans are short with these subjects. The time of day you shoot a subject outdoors makes a tremendous difference on the lighting color, shadows and contrast results. While it's true that you might be able to alter the result with software, it's never quite as good as an untouched original done right. Before you stick the camera up to your face, get in the habit of asking yourself "how can I make this shot great?"

Learn your cameras features
Don't be like most people who turn on their camera, point, click, then hope for the best. Take control! Even the most inexpensive digital cameras allow tremendous utility and flexibility which translates into photos that really stand out. At minimum learn to use your camera depth of field setting, your exposure settings and your fill flash options. These three features combine to help your camera capture your subject in a way that no camera by itself can do. Auto all the time is boring, learn to become a team with your camera.

Buy optics not megapixels
All the fuss and advertising these days over megapixels and image resolution is just plain overdone and terribly misunderstood. Take a tip from us when you go to buy your next camera: Buy based on the optics (lens) features and forget about the megapixels. Ultimately you want the highest speed (low f number) and greatest focal length (mm zoom length) versatility. Oh, and don't confuse digital zoom with optical zoom either. If you're evaluating a camera that doesn't discuss these specs then move on to another model that does. Get the best optics you can afford!

Shoot lots of pictures
Professionalism may be assessed by the use of detailed forms and paperwork, knowledge of photographic law, model releases, and property releases. Good timely documentation leaves little room for unpleasant surprises.

Use rapid charge batteries
Arguably the most important attributes have to do with chemistry, personality, reliability, discretion, flexibility, etc. Most people can judge a potential photographer by spending a little time chatting and by evaluating years in business and the photographer's clientele.
